Palawan is one of the provinces of the Philippines that are full of history. During World War II, Palawan played an important role. The province served as a common ground where Americans and Filipinos were able to bond. It also served as a witness to some significant events that transpired during the war. Among these events was the Palawan Massacre, making the Plaza Curatel a must-see place. A memorial has been erected on the site to commemorate the tragedy. It is located next to the Cathedral in Puerto Princesa.

Aside from its role in World War II, Palawan also served as home to Vietnamese refugees after the Vietnam War. Around 2,000 refugees were relocated to a village outside the city that was later on called Viet Ville. This site is located near Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa.
