On March 21st, Palawan recorded its first Coronavirus case. As of April 15, the Philippines’ Last Frontier currently has 2 positive cases with 26 individuals regarded as PUIs.
While these numbers appear minuscule compared to Metro Manila’s positive cases, Palawan locals should not belittle and neglect the risk of getting Coronavirus as it can be easily spread through respiratory vapor. That’s why it’s best to be aware of the necessary preventive measures to protect yourself from COVID-19.
Read on to know the steps that you need to be making now.
How to Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus in Palawan
1. Wash Your Hands Regularly
According to the CDC, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of Coronavirus and other infectious diseases is by washing your hands correctly.
Use soap and water to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, especially if you’ve been to a public space, or after coughing or sneezing. Make sure to lather the back of your hands and rub in between your fingers and under your nails.
If soap and water are not readily available, you can clean your hands using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
As much as possible, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with dirty and unwashed hands.
2. Follow Local Public Health Guidelines
The national government and healthcare workers are all urging people to stay home if they can in order to avoid being exposed to the virus.
Follow these protective measures to avoid close contact with individuals who are sick. This would ultimately help in preventing the spread of COVID-19 not only across Palawan but also across the country.
3. Practice Social Distancing
While it’s best to stay at home as much as possible, people still need to venture out to grocery stores, banks, or gas stations for their basic needs.
If you do need to leave the house, follow some basic preventative measures such as practicing social distancing. Put at least 6 feet of space between yourself and other people. And always remember that even if people are not showing any symptoms of COVID-19, they can still carry and spread the virus.
4. Cover Your Nose and Mouth
You can unknowingly spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. As such, you should wear a face mask or cloth face cover whenever you’re out in public. Once you get home, properly dispose of the used mask (or wash the cloth mask) and immediately wash your hands with soap and water.
If a mask is not available and you need to cough or sneeze, cover your face with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow. Again, throw used tissues in the trashcan and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
5. Clean and Disinfect Your Surroundings
You can also protect yourself from Coronavirus by regularly cleaning frequently touched surfaces. This includes doorknobs, sinks, toilets, light switches, tables, desks, and even your phones.
Disinfect these surfaces using a detergent or soap and water. You can also use household disinfectants.
If possible, wear disposable gloves to further limit the virus from spreading.
6. Boost Your Immune System
Aside from basic preventive actions, taking care of yourself is the best defense against Coronavirus.
Know that your body is better able to fight off the disease when you have a strong immune system. As such, it’s best to eat a healthy diet including lots of colorful vegetables and fruits. Cut down the intake of sugars and processed foods, no matter how tempting it is to eat them while on lockdown.
You should also get adequate sleep, fresh air, and sunlight daily. Exercising daily and staying hydrated is just as important, too!
By simply putting in an effort to get your body into tip-top shape, you’ll have a greater chance of preventing yourself from getting sick from the virus.
7. Take Care of Your Mental Health
In addition to your physical health, you should also take care of your mental health.
During these times, you may feel high levels of anxiety, stress, and uncertainty of what’s happening around the world. All of these can have an overall toll on your immune system—the opposite of what you need in this situation.
One way you can take care of your mental health is by taking breaks every now and then from the news. Whether you get them on TV or on social media, you should dedicate a quiet time for yourself as hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
You can also try meditation or do activities you enjoy such as reading a book or painting. Lastly, take this time to connect with your family and friends. Talk with them about your concerns and share how you are feeling. Acknowledging your feelings is a vital part of soothing yourself.
Coronavirus can easily be passed along by anyone, whether they’re sick or asymptomatic. You need to practice strict preventive measures if you want to take care of yourself and those around you from COVID-19.
